About Rowing at Tudor

TUDOR CHALLENGE 2023 - CLICK HERE

Gig rowing is one of the UK`s fastest growing water based activities and Tudor SC has the perfect location in the sheltered waters of Langstone harbour, a major south coast wildlife haven.

Rowing gigs are recognised as one of the first shore-based lifeboats that went to vessels in distress, with recorded rescues going back as far as the late 17th century. The 15ft. Bursledon gig is an extremely versatile craft able to be rowed by 1, 2, 3, or 4, rowers plus a cox. Easily launched and recovered, exceptionally seaworthy and rigged with modern carbon fibre oars, they are a pleasure to use

In 2016 the club acquired its first 15ft Bursledon gig 'Rosie'. The rowing section has greatly expanded since then and there are now 5 gigs in the club, with active all year round rowing catering for the leisure rower or the more serious racers.

The sport is 'easy entry', just step on board and within 15 minutes the complete novice 'has the action'. This, coupled with growing awareness for the necessity of a healthy lifestyle and importantly the balanced, whole body exercise that rowing provides continues to draw ever increasing numbers to this great sea activity.

Apart from the fantastic exercise inherent in coastal rowing there is another important aspect. The improvement to mental well being derived from just 'being on the open sea', surrounded by an abundance of wildlife from Seals to flocks of migrating birds and occasionally the great pleasure of rowing by Moonlight on calm waters. A very special experience indeed.

Gig rowing at Tudor is a very sociable pursuit, offering members the opportunity to get out onto the water to have some fun and build confidence in a friendly, unpressured environment. Apart from the purely leisure aspects of our rowing, we also have racing teams, we support competitions and regattas across the Eastern Solent, and travel to away events such as the annual Thames Great River Race where we always finish in the top echelons, the link below will take you to one of the Tudor teams in their boat 'Freedom' in the 2019 race:- CLICK HERE

All Tudor SC rowers, be they leisure or competitive, can benefit from the experience and skill developed by our core racing rowers, who are more than happy to pass on their experience. Details of organised rows are available on the activities calendar.
